Rainwater Harvesting: How Xoop Homes Conserves Water in Antigua

At Xoop Homes, we believe that great hospitality should go hand-in-hand with caring for our planet. Nestled in the scenic hills of Cedar Valley, Antigua—where sunshine and warm weather are constants—we’ve taken intentional steps to reduce our environmental footprint. One of the most impactful ways we do this is through rainwater harvesting as a suppliment to our usual water service from our provider.

Why Rainwater Harvesting?

Antigua is blessed with short bursts of tropical rain, but like many islands in the Caribbean, it also faces periods of drought and limited freshwater resources. By collecting and storing rainwater, we reduce the pressure on local water systems and ensure we have a sustainable backup water supply for our guests.

At Xoop Homes, we encourage guests to help conserve water when using the washing machine by doing full loads only and selecting the eco or quick wash cycle whenever possible. This ensures that each wash uses water efficiently while still keeping your clothes fresh and clean. Our machines are energy- and water-efficient, but thoughtful usage goes a long way in protecting Antigua’s limited water resources. By combining loads with your family or waiting until you have enough laundry, you can make a positive impact during your stay.

How It Works at Xoop Homes

At both of our cottages, specially designed rooftop systems collect rainwater and channel it through gutters into large storage tanks. This water is then used for:

  • Flushing Toilets
  • Cooking
  • Bathing
  • Outdoor Cleaning and Maintenance
  • Watering the  gardens (including nurturing our 40+ young palm trees!)

This system operates quietly and efficiently, helping us save thousands of gallons of water each year.

Why It Matters

Water conservation isn’t just a trend—it’s a necessity. By harvesting rainwater:

  • We contribute to sustainable tourism in Antigua.

  • We help reduce the impact of seasonal water shortages.

  • We empower our guests to travel more responsibly.

 How You Can Help

We invite all our guests to join us in our eco-efforts by:

  • Turning off the tap while brushing teeth

  • Taking shorter showers

  • Turning off the air conditioning when not in use (rooms cool down in just 5 minutes!)

Small changes make a big difference, especially when many guests contribute

At Xoop Homes, our motto is: Hosting is not what we do, it’s ALL we do.” That includes hosting the environment with the same care we offer our guests. By choosing to stay with us, you’re not only enjoying comfort, convenience, and Caribbean charm—you’re also supporting sustainability.

Come stay with us and be a part of the change.
